Lawyers, guns and money
Oct. 29th, 2022 11:45Well, no guns but I've got to give Warren his due and I've had a bunch of lawyers and money work this week.
It all started when we received a tax statement from Rusk County, Texas for $128.43 land tax as our part of an oil patch. We actually paid $82.85 last year but I never followed it up.
Dana's family were pretty big in the oil business after WWII. They owned a huge company that went public and generated I don't know how many millions of paper money before it all crashed. All I know is we get $3000 tax consideration per year long term capital loss from money she lost on stock and we will not live nearly long enough to stop being able to claim it.
Meanwhile there are various splinters (they call them splits) of oil wells all over the place that have been handed down. And the paperwork and tracking is a mess. Huge mess. For the most part it has not been a bunch of money but thanks to the Ruskees that has changed and now the tax people are coming after us. BUT we haven't received any royalties. Not kosher. I spent last week tracking down what was going on and have found that someone screwed up but so far not who or what are the ramifications of that screw up. I think someone owes us money. Not millions but maybe a thousand or two. I'm learning a lot about the oil royalty business and am determined to get it unscrewed. Turns out, by the way there are other little oil splits that have been misfiled. There are a few. So now I have a job that will pay at least a little money.
Meanwhile, I found a group of photos from the Ranch. See if you can guess the theme:
