Pickleball today was fun. Not really very challenging but I'm up to 8k steps before noon.
I've done lots of Prolific surveys about climate change. They always want to know if I believe it exists and if I believe it is mostly a result of human interaction.
Yes
Yes
When we were growing up in Winston-Salem our family built a house in Blowing Rock, NC. Down the road from Boone, 126 miles from Ashville if you go by the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Best story of how things should be done:
My father shook hands with the builder who agreed that he'd build the house adding 10% to the cost for his profit. They didn't have a contract. They didn't even have architecture plans. They had a picture from a magazine that was kind of what Dad wanted but 'if you make this change and that change it should be about right.' The builder spoke Appalachian which is not really English and he mumbled. Most amazing thing I've ever heard of. And the house was lovely. And the builder became a good friend of the family and watched after the house in the winter. And one day I saved his life in a snow storm. Different story. But true.
I spent a lot of time in Boone and probably should never have left. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo, a cat 5 when it first made landfall blew a lot of trees down. There was actually more damage in the mountains of NC with Hugo than on the coast. Not a lot of press about that.
This is getting more press. I just saw a video of the main street of Boone and it was a river flowing past the 'General Store' which is mostly a tourist trap, and what used to be a pretty good micro brewery.
Appalachian State College is in Boone and there is a lot of money there but they are going to have a hard time. I'm pretty sure that they are entirely cut off. That whole section of North Carolina is fed by a system of winding mountain roads that easily wash out especially when the trees are blown down.
I'm more than a little sad about all that. And Kris Kristofferson died.
Another icon of my life.
