Slightly upside down day
Nov. 22nd, 2023 12:27I had a protein shake for breakfast using all but one tablespoon of my yogurt in it. The last tablespoon I donated to a new batch of yogurt that will be ready tomorrow. Overnight in the brisker seems to grow the right amount of bacteria in it. Tablespoon of non fat dry milk seems to thicken it about right so I'll have five jars (small ones) of greek yogurt tomorrow with the right texture.
At seven tonight I've got a pickleball class. Apparently we're still going to have it which is fine with me. I'll get there at 6 and meet up with others in the class to do some warm up. Which means I need to eat dinner soon. Which means I need to take Zoe out for her walk sooner.
I won't be home until about 8:30 which turns out to be about the right time for me to eat cereal.
The pickleball class is OK. We end up playing an hour of matches. I'd rather have some drills to improve specific skills but it it ends up working out well enough. Last week we played king of the court. There were 8 of us, two courts, playing at once. The winning pair on the 'lower' court moves up to the 'upper' court and vice versa. The winning pair on the 'upper' court stays there but splits one on each side. So the two winners from the 'lower' court end up playing with one of the 'upper' court winners. This results in constant mixing of doubles partners which keeps any two people from dominating. It also can, and did last week, end up with one person constantly staying on the 'upper' court. The king's court. I won ever match and at the end of the night was the only individual that was undefeated. Most of the people in the class are under 40 so I was happy to have won.
That also demonstrates a truth in pickleball. Tactics can beat strength. It is nearly impossible to hit the ball so hard it passes by someone who is back far enough. It's a whiffle ball so it quickly slows and if you can calculate the right spot to be in it is easy to return overhead smashes. It is actually good drop shots that beat strength and partners working together that win the day. I got lucky with some of my drops and was able to coordinate with a variety of partners to win four or five games in a row.
I've never played with a partner consistently. Every group I play with rotates randomly so no one dominates. I miss having my son around. He and I would be really good. Lacking that I'm on the lookout for someone to play with that will complement my style and fill the weaknesses of my game. One day. Then we'll do a tournament and see what happens.
