We had a good time at the movies. It is (within its genre) a great movie. Within any genre it should easily vie for best soundtrack, costumes, and scenery. So well done. They drop you in post war Tokyo and it seems as authentic as can be. The life that the people of Tokyo were living as they dig out of the war is there too. Just really well done.
And, weirdly, Godzilla is amazing to see. It is a PG monster. No blood when the people get squashed. Lots of people getting chomped and thrown but no heads being ripped off or anything. Very interesting choices. It stays well within the classic Godzilla we watched for 25 cents at the Carolina theater in Winston-Salem when I was a couple of years younger. Really nice restraint in this day and age.
And Godzilla chomping ships and smashing buildings maintained believable proportions and was as realistic as computers can do now days.
The whole thing was in Japanese (even Godzilla had an accent, I think) with subtitles.
This is the 37th Godzilla movie. There will be more. It is the first one I've seen in quite a while and I'm glad I waited for it. I hope kids watch it too. Marvel could learn a few things.
