Crosby's anti-eponymous album has some lovely songs in it and I always kind of felt an affinity with the thought expressed in the title.

How is it that a teacher doesn't care what time on a Monday (any time is fine) I get there to pick up kids I'm taking back home?  If it is Memorial Day and schools are closed.  And is today Memorial Day?

So after all the self generated angst it is not until next Monday.  I got up early-ish, took Zoe out for a short walk and realized there was no coffee and I didn't have time to make any.  But there is a Starbucks not too far out of the way.  Pouring rain all the way down the road to the Starbucks 15 miles away.  There was an elfin employee standing by the ordering speaker holding a box substitution for an umbrella over his head and a sign saying "no electricity".  So no Starbucks.  Nor any coffee or breakfast roll to be had at any of the other choices as I looked around to see the obvious, only the traffic signals were working.  No other store lights anywhere.

As I gave up on breakfast and coffee I sent an email to the house where I was picking up the boys.  A few minutes later I got a call from the CPS person in charge of the case telling me I was a week early.

Good rehearsal, though.

Now........

If only I could remember my name.

I saw that. There was a documentary about them, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Fifty By Four, that I caught recently. It combined a lot of information and interviews, including Young, with background on the whole Laurel Canyon scene that had so much to do with it (Our House was actually located in Laurel Canyon). The upshot is that Crosby was hedonistic and narcissistic BEFORE his girlfriend died and he descended into a drug addled state of addiction. He was a hair's breadth from dying and Nash kind of brought him back. But that was the last straw. The others had already given up long before and Nash finally did too.

It is a quatrain of monumental egos who worked together for a few years putting creativity ahead of their personal well being. Once it blew up it was done. The money people tried to patch it back together for 'another album'. And they did create one or two but nothing even close to the first two.

Neil Young made the point that it was never a group. Hence the name. It was a combination of four people playing together for a short time. Crosby continues to call it a group. They can't even agree on that.

But they did make some magic.

It's sad to me people who spent such a pivotal time in their lives together cannot even sit in the same room. We humans are a pathetic bunch sometimes.

Exactly. So out of practice with this 'schedule' thing.

Reminds me of the Australian song "The Pub With No Beer"! If I'd driven fifteen miles for coffee and found there wasn't any I'd be a weeping heap by the side of the road. And that goes double for finding my dreaded trip had been prepared for for nothing.

Yeah, a little traumatic. I've over it now.
It is amazing how complex it was to be ready. Back when I ran a company I did more in the first two hours of the morning than most people did in a day and now it is hard just to get set up for a fairly local road trip. The downside of being anti-social.
