Just heard the line:  'we are forces of chaos and anarchy' listening to Jefferson Airplane's performance on the Dick Cavett Show (the one that was so important that Joni Mitchell missed the seminal even of the hippie generation so she would make it) that was recorded the day Woodstock ended.  Grace and the boys are still jamming in the background.  In my mind going on in the background is Joni talking to the Airplane people and CSN, all friends of hers and they were telling her all about Woodstock.  'yeah, you know, we were going down to Yasgar's farm.....  ' and she had this idea for a song.

How I got there is even more important to me.  I was watching a recording of last nights music awards show this morning.  It was filled with Minag and Jay Z and a lot of others not on the remote ripples of my radar.  But these shows have a list of people who have died in the past year and that is always a segment relevant to me.  This year's surprise was Melanie.  As in Melanie Safka, AKA 'Lay Down - Candles in the Rain'.  She died week before last and I was unaware.

I fell in love with Melanie the first time I heard her voice and have never fallen out of love with her.  Fortunately, since she died a lot of people have dug through their archives and put the video they had of her onto YouTube so she is being memorialized as never before.

Hence my rabbit hole.

This one is going to be difficult to dig out of.  Melanie was one of the last folk singers from the 60s.  And her voice still rose above the music.

So I'm back here reliving the youth that I wish I'd lived the first time.  I was 16 living the summer in New York City when Woodstock happened.  I could have been there.  But, of course, I didn't quite catch the wave.  Fell off the back, I guess.

Anyway, I'm down here for a while.  Then I'm going to the grocery store.
