We bought our Whirlpool refrigerator in Oct of 2018 when we moved into our house. I paid for a whole house appliance warranty after the first year when they all expired. As with any insurance/warranty it is a Las Vegas kind of gamble, you vs the house. The odds are only a bit better.
The refer (Navy way of saying refrigerator) has an ice maker and I knew that I was really paying for that. Refrigerators don't break down for the first 10 years but ice makers invariably do. And ours has, three times now. The downside to the warranty is there is a $75 flat rate per incident. This covers the admin for the parent warranty company (2-10 if you are interested) and keeps the customers from calling for every little thing. It is a good compromise. So I've spent $150 on fixing the ice machine so far. They have replaced all the parts and fixed the major mechanic issues.
Last night it failed. The supply line that delivers water to the little tray freezes. I've got the freezer turned to its lowest setting (or its highest temp.. I had to spend some time to be sure I was not doing it backwards) and it is still a little too cold. Cold enough to freeze the line.
