He doesn't want to eat cake
Mar. 6th, 2025 11:06I baked a cake for Toby's birthday yesterday (he turned 8). He didn't like it. But Zoe did so she is all set for her birthday cake.

It is peanut butter, shredded carrots, whole wheat flour, honey and oil. And baking soda. What's not to like?
No matter. It was easy to make and everything was on hand.
I talked with my friend who has a wood shop yesterday and I'm going over today. We're going to discuss the general chicken house plans. I think we're going to build it in a modular fashion so we can easily transport it from his shop and reassemble here.
It is mostly a box on stilts with some screened in area below and a six foot wired run to one side. We'll end up extending the run eventually so that they can get to the side of the house and have a little room to do their chicken thing.
There are a couple of problems to solve including access to the door that has to close at night. The ramp for them to go home is inside the run and one of the plans I have has the run about two and a half feet high. No way for a people to get in there to close the hatch (which will, I think, be an actual doggee door). So I need to make the attached run big enough for a person to get into or figure out a way to open and close the hatch from outside. I think the former. I think the attachment to the coop will be more like five feet high so person can get inside it and move around some. We'll see.
It is going to be somewhat of a lean-to up against the house. There is a roof drip line that will have to be dealt with so I think the coop will just have a roof slanted from the house to beyond the drop line. Not that it rains that much here.
The last time I did this I had tiled flooring to keep the underlying plywood dry. I think something similar this time too. Not too expensive and easy to lay down.
And I've got to figure out a way to mount the swamp cooler. Same one we got last time but this will not have as much room so I need to find a way to have it there. I might have to build a box hanging off the outside of the coop to house the cooler.
And where to mount the camera or cameras. One inside and one over looking the run.
So many things to think about and we haven't even gotten to where we're going to keep the chicks while they are growing.
