There were four new dogs at the Ranch today. Three of them are probably three or so month old puppies. One is a more senior mama whose name is Paisley:

The story I got was that they came from a farm that had 40 or so dogs all running around and breeding.  The four at the Ranch are not well.  They have what I can only assume are various infections and diseases.  The three puppies have no idea what it means to take a walk and have not, apparently, ever been on a leash.  One of the other volunteers and I managed to get them out for a bit of a walk.

But Paisley, who is my new love, seems to be sicker.  I'm hoping it is nothing really bad but she is way under weight and has cuts and things she scratches at.  But she is a very cute personality.  Sweet.  A lap sitter.  She maybe weighs 15 pounds and probably should weigh around 20.  So not a big dog.  She's got that kind of wiry hair of a terrier but I'm guessing she's got dozens of breeds in her pedigree.

She's in a great place now and is old enough to remain.  I hope.  I'd love to see her when she is well and feisty.

After my tour at the Ranch I took Dana to the acute care doctor at Scott and White.  She's been sick since about mid November.  It is a thing that happens to her if she does not get an immunity enhancing infusion periodically this time of year.  Allergies begat chest cold begat one infection or another and she ends up at the doc or in the hospital.  I KNOW this.  She KNOWS this.  But we have to convince a new immunologist that it happens before he will OK the restart of the infusions that kept her well for seven years.  The problem is that he needs to find a blood test that shows she needs it.  My experience and Dana's experience is not enough.  In his defense it is a couple of thousand bucks per infusion.  Or the cost of about half an hour in the hospital if she doesn't get them and gets sick too quick for meds to handle.

She's got a fist full of meds now so I'm hoping we can get things under control.  Meanwhile I'm sending messages to the immuno doc to help him understand.

But her care today was exceptional.  It was a PA whose only problem in my book was she used the 'so WE'RE not feeling well?  Is it our cough?'.  There are few things more offputting to me than the form of how are 'we' doing?

Other than that, she gave the best description of what was going on, why we should not be using codeine cough syrup which is, apparently, going away permanently in the US healthcare system, and what other cough suppressant we can use.  And set us up with more powerful antibiotics.

HEB handled the prescriptions really quickly and since they are right next to us, made it easy.

The whole thing was the way medical was supposed to work.  The meds (five of them) cost us about $66 so well worth it.  No price gouging here.

Other than that is going to be chilly tonight so tomorrow morning's pickleball will be a cold one to start.  Got my long pickling pants and my gloves.

Hope Dana feels better SOON! I'm with you on being annoyed about "we". Glad everything else went smoothly with the doc visit.

Paisley looks like a sweetie and I hope she heals up quickly.
