Turns out they have a channel on Roku.  Like Netflix or YoutubeTV.  It ran the evening's convention broadcast without comment just as it streamed.

Weirdly I understood it all without having someone explain or interpret it for me.

So much nicer without the injected conflict.

I do so miss the "Mr Speaker!!!!!!!!!!!  MR SPEAKER!!!!!!!!! The Great State of Kansas, the state of the Sunflower, the Jayhawk state, the breadbasket of the country casts its 22 votes for its favorite son [insert some local Kansas politician you've never heard of here] for the next president of the United States!!!!!!!!!!!"

First round of voting prior to the 1980 convention was a lot of that kind of stuff.  It was pointless, colorful, chaotic and glorious democracy in action.  Both parties.  The conventions used to run all night on TV and I would watch them.  It was a circus lead by the ringmaster, Walter Cronkite, and a civics lesson in a box.

After 1980 there was no reason to even have the conventions and they are now gone for good.  It is a lot like moving from the spit and rosin of a live orchestra to a synthesizer.  It's going to happen.  The path of least resistance.  And the sound is cleaner and more precise.  But there's something about all that wasted energy, the dirt and smoke and sweat that contributed to a human sound.

All in all for a first try I think they are doing OK.  Things are a little rough but they manage to stumble through the miscues.  Tonight is Kamala night.

I'm embarrassed to admit I never watched one before. But when I called my mom last night and she was appalled that I hadn't heard Michelle Obama's speech the night before, I tuned in. And I *did* enjoy it. Hearing about empathy, and hard work, and people caring for each other again, was the most uplifting message I've heard in 4 years. It was also interesting learning about Jill Biden. i think she'll make an excellent First Lady (several levels of upgrade from our current one). I wish I felt as sure about Joe Biden. Yes, he has experience and determination and love of country and all that. But he looks so old and frail now - does he still have what it takes? (I will of course be voting for him regardless.)

A bag of concrete would get my vote so anything I say must be viewed through that lens.

I've liked Joe Biden for a long time. He was the best Vice President in my lifetime supporting and enhancing everything the President did and extending the Executive branch to recover from what is now the second worst recession in my lifetime.

What he will do that will make his age unimportant is he will build the team that will rebuild a solid government again. The people who actually run the government are not elected. They are appointed and/or hired and those ranks have been decimated over the past three years. Not just by having hired 'my people' which is common but by forcing out anyone who does not profess fealty to the king. Much like Kim Jong-un, Trump has removed people who do not applaud loudly enough. So far he has not had them executed.

Biden is so well known and so trusted by both sides of the isle he will be able to bring together a coalition to repair much of the damage done by the Trump dynasty in waiting.

So that if something does happen to him the base is still there to run things and support Harris. I'd love it if he were a decade younger but he's strong enough to win the nomination and the election.

You are right, of course. The best managers don't do the work themselves -- they select and inspire the right people. Thanks for reminding me of that.

(I'd vote for the bag of concrete too, if it was the only non-Trump option.)
