The networks that screen off events with a wall of subscritpion are not doing what they think. I've watched a few minutes of NFL this year and might watch more but not as I used to. And now tennis. I bought a three month subscription to ESPN + to have access to Wimbledon and the U.S. Open but discovered today that the U.S. Open final is only available on a higher level of ESPN. So they hope to have me pay more to watch something I really would like to see. Same with the NFL and college football. Most of the games that are worth watching are behind temporarily constructed pay walls making them, essentially, pay per view.
And I don't. They've pushed me away. I can live without it. It is kind of sad. I used to have a lot of joy watching football but it is so difficult to have a consistent viewing habit throughout the year without paying a lot of money on top of the commercials that they have that I just lose interest.
Baseball sucked the interest out of me mostly the same way. If they don't have enough respect for the game to prevent a strike during the World Series then neither do I. But my emnity runs deeper and lasts longer.
So it goes.
