Yesterday was Dr day.  Cardiologist for me in the morning and vet for Zoe in the afternoon.  We're fine but apparently gravity has increased over the years and we both got a weight mention.  Both a repeat.

So I heated up a cinnamon roll to think about it.

I just weighed myself this morning which I seldom do and I'm about the same as six months ago which to me is a victory but apparently the doc seems to think not so much.  I figure that if I lose 10 pounds in six months the doc will be happy and I'll declare victory and the next hill to climb.  Or coast down.

Over the years diets have gone from macrobiotics to keto.  After trying several different things I've discovered I can not live on a keto type diet.  And would rather be obese.  I constantly feel ill without carbs and nothing can change my feelings about the taste of broccoli or asparagus.

I managed to stay barely inside the lines during my Naval career mostly by exercise and some moderation.  Age makes it more difficult.  You'd think that dropping three or so alcohol drinks/day from my diet would make a difference and it does but not from a weight perspective.  So my goal is once I'm free of my current work gig to  start adding bicycle miles to my daily walk with Zoe.  Four years ago I was riding over 100 miles a week.  Then I had my hip and knee replacement and we moved away from the best place to ride so I got out of the habit.

And Zoe suffers from age and too many treats.  She's up a couple of pounds but at 75 pounds that is significant.  So, poor girl, she gets the same treatment.

It is time for us to be a little more active anyway.

I followed a strict Keto diet for 7 months. I lost 40 lbs. However, I found last year, I could do the pandemic or Keto, but not both. I've gained weight back and am currently deciding what adjustments I can make and stick to.

Yeah, that is the refrain from anyone who does the keto type diet. South Beach, et al. Same with me. I did Nutrisystem and a couple of other name brand ones and they always work for a while.

I'm thinking of signing up (next month when I can control my time again) for Noom. But I may just get a good tracking program and keep up with intake and expense, food and exercise, and see how it goes. My goals are very modest and I only want to make changes I'll stay with for years.

Same here. I'm not sure how the Noom program works. I need to do some research.

I love google. This appeared in my news stream since I created an article with the word weight in it.

I'm also a big carb eater, but I do also like broccoli and asparagus.

I weigh the same as when the pandemic started, but I know if I were to go to a doctor she would tell me to lose weight. Fffft. Good luck to you with your ten pounds, but I feel victorious just having not gained any weight.

I think I'm about the same. I don't check very often. But I need to do more, move more, and maybe be a little more present when I eat.

Congrats for maintaining. It IS a victory.

I'm sure you weren't actually looking for diet advice, but what is the internet for but forcing your opinion on people? I'm lucky in that I actually like and prefer vegetables and other healthy stuff to unhealthy. I am however unlucky in that I have a thyroid problem that means I can't eat what other people do and keep my weight stable. What's worked for me the best is intermittent fasting. Keto is horrible and dieting every day is also horrible, but I can do one or two very low calorie days in a week (two to lose weight, then one for maintenance) knowing I don't have to diet the rest of the week. It's not like it's not hard on those days, but hey, it's just two (or one) days and the mental freedom from worrying about it on the other days is hard to overestimate. A good study came out recently that found that intermittent fasting was even more effective for men.

Re cardiovascular exercise, while it's good for you and will work for Zoe since she can't choose to eat more, there have been some pretty conclusive studies that show that it's not effective for weight loss as it increases appetite. Lifting weights does have more effect as the more muscle the more calories burned, and the benefit of that is that the higher burn rate still happens while you're slouching on the sofa.

Yeah, I'm not a fasting person and have no intention of taking things that seriously. Adding cycling and cutting out a few calories will do what I need. I'm way too old too get serious about this and I've read enough and experience enough to know what works for me. The middle way. Not making myself miserable is pretty high on my list.

Sounds like you know what you're doing! Minimizing the agony is definitely the goal.
