Single again

Dana is going back up to Tyler for the 4th or 5th birthday of her grandson.  When they were here a few weeks ago her son and D-I-L were encouraging me to come up with Dana.  They have lots of room.  And a pool.  And land to ride a mountain bike.  Nothing to keep me here.

I just nod my head and mumble 'sounds great'.  But it sounds like one of the circles of hell to me.  When Dana leaves and it is just me and Zoe and a quiet, cool, clean house.  No packing, no 8 hours round trip in a car, no kids..... 

It is funny to watch her son and DIL who seem almost desperate to have people around them all the time.  They are the most social people I've ever seen by far and are nice but exhausting to be around.  And then there are the kids.  

But I'll be here without an excuse for being there.  They will get over my absence.  Or not.  I'll enjoy the quiet.   Counting flowers on the wall.

"...'til dawn, with a deck of fifty-one...."</i You may have touched on something, there, in saying they seem almost desperate to have people around them all the time. Could be a need, rather than a desire. Not saying, ever, that needing is wrong, but a need may indicate something to be addressed by the one doing the needing. Enjoy the cool, the quiet and the calm.

I've been working from home since April of 2020. Once in awhile Mr. L has to head out for half a day for one reason or another, and I revel in the solitude. It's just the two of us. What makes it so special? Beats me, but I think he enjoys being alone on the two days I go into the office, too.

Sounds like you dodged a bullet there. I have a friend who's moved to the country two hours north of Auckland. She has her spare room all set up and is always inviting me to come up for the weekend. That is not going to happen. I would a million times rather drive up there and back in a day (which I have done) than stay with anyone at all without any time with no socialising. No doubt by now you and Dana have worked this kind of stuff out but I hope it doesn't cause conflict. Sometimes it's difficult to extroverts to really get it.

I completely understand.

Why is it so many people don't understand when you simply desire solitude? As an introvert, I usually/always prefer to be left to my own devices.

We've been married 25 years and she is appreciative that I don't mind she goes up without me. Different way of looking at it. She far more social than I and so it works out perfectly.

After a few years of constantly being together without a job or other event during the day we're happy to be on our own for a few. We appreciate coming back together but both like being able to do our own stuff.
