We've had an empty house next door for a month or so.  Dana has been in touch with the owners for the past year through Facebook.  They may or may not move down from Boston depending on the week but have been renting it out.  Owner's brother or cousin or something is there now doing some repairs.  And, of course, Dana kicked off a conversation with him out front.  Perfect.  It is what she does and I'm all for it.  She knows everyone around here.

But then the guy rings the bell to give us a present from the owner for the remote help Dana has rendered.  So far, so good.  I waved at him at the door and then retreated to my office.  He did not have a mask.  Nor did Dana.  He is younger and maybe vaccinated but Dana and I are in that group the CDC considers vulnerable.

New rules.  It is incredibly presumptuous and rude to arrive at someone's door maskless.  Neither he nor Dana meant it.  Which means when she goes to see her immunocompromised brother later today she will not mean to carry the Delta variant with her.  Odds are I'm being dramatic and the odds are miniscule that she will do so.  And I'm at all cost an avoider of conflict so did not say anything until the guy had left.

Things have, for the foreseeable future, changed.  I feel like instead of a 'No Solicitor' sign we should have a sign saying 'No Mask, No Knock'.  And it is not even politics at this point.

Meanwhile I've got an order into HEB for groceries.  Part of it is some bread and some lettuce.  I've got a tomato that is yearning for the rest of the ingredients to be a BLT.

It's the Part of the Problem vs. Part of the Solution. Wear a Fucking Mask. I have noticed around here that masks are pretty much back on and when you encounter someone without one, at least they have the courtesy to look embarrassed about being naked. I think the BLT defense is the way to go.

I agree. There should be someone at the door with a mask on. I will not answer to anyone else unless it's a family member.

We're lucky enough to have a storm door with a glass panel at our front door, so we can open the inside door and see if whoever is there is wearing a mask or not, and they can see that we are. We were getting a bit slack for a while after we were fully vaccinated, but in the last few weeks we've taken to putting on the mask whenever someone comes to the door, and asking them to put one on if they have one handy.

When I was in Seattle, sister and I were maskless most of the time. It was a lull before the delta storm. But it was nice for a while.

You would think it ain't politics, but just ask Governor Wheels about that...

It never *was* politics — for the sane people.

Star Trek fans know that while a mask is a useful tool and panacea, what we need is a tricorder — a device which you hold in your hand, point, push a button and it will show any viruses lurking nearby.
