Why we don't go out much
Mar. 15th, 2023 10:08We went to an Austin FC game last night. It was great. The facility is lovely and the atmosphere was fun. This was not the usual MLS league game and not sold out. The stadium was not full. The place would be amazing with a full crowd in a close game. As it was the end where the heavy duty fans are is close enough so you can enjoy it and far enough away that the flying beer does not hit. Beer throwing is a tradition when there is a goal.
It was fun and I know who most of the people are on the team so it was fun to see them play in person. That said, there is a cost.
Parking $50. I could probably do better now I know the terrain.
Food for two $46.69 The worst cheeseburger I've had in my memory, some pretty good fries and split a Dr Pepper.
Tickets $197 The cheap seats. Very high up, small and hard. There are no bad site lines in Q2 so the cheap seats can see just fine. There is the advantage of it being so hard to get to and from the seats that running to grab a beer doesn't seem worth it even if I could take out a new mortgage to afford one.
And, of course, gas and tolls so add another $10.
And, of course, people.
Total fiscal cost: $303.69
There are people who go to every game. There are not rich people who go to every game.
The water costs $10. A bottle of water. Not even a big one.
I'm not particularly cost sensitive but I'm thinking that I can see just fine from my living room.

But maybe I'm just out of touch. The last sports tickets I bought were to see the Knicks at Madison Square Garden in 1997. (And it was cancelled as there was a blizzard. Personally I thought the blizzard was more fun - we walked all the way from just below Harlem to the Garden in snow up to our knees - but my ex-husband was extremely pissed.)
