3 hours turned out to be OK

I don't write reviews but for
mallorys_camera I'll make an exception.
For those of us who know who Niels Bohr and friends are without having to take a remedial lesson, Oppenheimer is like wading through the history we grew up with. In retrospect I'd have liked to read up a bit more on Trinity and the 'project' before seeing the movie. It was very character driven so not knowing all the characters made it a little harder to follow. But much more so for the real target audience, those who before this movie had not heard of Oppenheimer. Maybe it will drive them to find out more.
I knew some of the story, of course, having been weaned on it. The movie was a mosaic being assembled by a master before your eyes. But for maybe 15 minutes the 3 hours flew by. (the runpee app worked as advertised but we didn't need it).
For comparison, The Longest Day is also 3 hours. The Titanic is 3:15 (but seems twice that, of course).
Oppenheimer did not feel nearly as long. Without a time piece I'd have guessed 2 and a half hours at most.
The story is good, the acting is outstanding, managing to put the whole thing together without being preachy was amazing.
I read that it HAD to be seen on the big screen preferably on IMAX. Not sure why. Lots of boom. Lots of pretty colors. But the story is about the people and being in a movie theater adds nothing. Unless you really want to go to a theater, I'd recommend waiting and seeing it on TV. I'll watch it again in my living room.

Date: 2023-07-22 12:49 (UTC)Yeah, I've been on the fence about this one.
Generally, I enjoy watching films in movie theaters and go to quite a few sub-par movies—just so I can sit in a dark movie theater and eat stale Raisinets.
But I've felt curiously unmotivated viz Oppenheimer. Even though Nolan directed one of my favorite films (The Prestige)
I guess I am feeling like my daily half-hour foray through the news every morning is enough character-driven doom & gloom. 😀
