Dana wanted to get Christmas stuff down from the attic. So she went up the ladder and got some. Since the ladder was down I went up and looked at what was still there. And found five crates of MY crap.

Some of it was legitimately saved.  There's corp and llc documents that we needed to hang on to but everything has been dissolved for over five years now so it can all go.  AND there are tons of pictures that we don't have the wall space for.  Photos from my childhood and such.  I'm going to scan them and throw them out along with their cheap ass frames.

No one wants the stuff and it is just mean to leave it to someone else to toss.

I've also got a crate of winter sweaters that have survived previous purges.  One from the Perth Yacht Club is a favorite.  I'll try it on but really I hate heavy sweaters and I'm not going to be tramping around in the snow anymore.   Both of my sons are bigger than me.  The last time I had a sweater that was no longer needed my granddaughter ended up with it.  She was cute in it and maybe that is the solution here.  The rest of the stuff has little personal meaning but is only being saved because it kept me warm once or twice.  I think it will go out to Goodwill.

So, trash and Goodwill.

We have almost no attic at all.  Used to be they would add flooring to the attic for storage but now they save the pennies, run wiring all over the place so that none of it is accessible, and fill it with insulation.  There is about three 4x8 pieces of plywood worth of floor space to put stuff.  A few suitcases and a few boxes is all.  In retrospect, that is a good thing.  Crap expands to fill available storage.  Dana has two rooms full of crap plus a walk in closet that you can't walk into.  I've managed with my office and one small closet and am, frankly, better off for it.

But enough for today.  I got up and baked her a birthday cake and I'm fried.  Time for a rest.

I have a box of beautiful handmade wool sweaters in the loft as well - I came across a shop in Scotland that sold nothing but these sweaters and they were incredibly cheap, so I scooped them up. The problem is that Auckland is most of the time too warm to wear them, and if I travel to colder places I always wear technical gear.

You never know who might in the family get interested in the photos. I have family photos going back to the 1880s and I treasure them.

I am going through "The clear out" because i have seen a number of neighbours who have passed, then the skip arrives with the children having to sort things out.

Bill you have done it again ! I have virtually zero understanding of technology and as you know i am also thinning out my house. I have hundreds of photos from my daughters childhood and have been pestering her to please come and see what she wants. But she keeps putting this off. But then along comes "inspirational Bill" ! I learn from you that i can do something and asked the husband what you meant by scanning your photos and then trashing them. So now i know and have the answer to my dilemma ! From across the miles thank you ha ha ! My hip is getting worse so February 12th please hurry up and come. Take care and keep posting your lovely posts especially with your fur babies.

You really are related to Susan! I’m always amazed at how ruthless she is about pitching stuff.

That’s a great system. My problem is that I never get around to reading the magazines…
