A little drama, second time in a week, at the Ranch. I was walking Duchess, the pitbull with the most fighting experience. She is docile. She rolls on the ground and play bites with a very soft mouth. I wrestle with her all the time and she is afraid of the knotted tug rope after having hit herself in the eye once while swinging it around. I'd have her in our house in a minute if we didn't have other dogs.

Duchess hanging out in the sun with me.

But there was another dog, Skyla, who was being walked a ways away that decided to lunge and get away from her walker so that she could attack Duchess. Not a smart move. Skyla is smaller and apparently not very bright.

Cute Skyla before she decided to do something dumb

Had I not been holding onto Duchess Skyla would have been killed or badly maimed. As it was, Duchess grabbed Skyla's lip and would not let go. Pitbulls don't let go. I finally managed to get them apart when the guy that had been walking Skyla finally got her leash again.

It was a pretty high adrenaline moment. I've got no fear at all with Duchess (or any of the dogs). I know them all pretty well and they trust me. So I was grabbing Duchess' head and trying to pry it away while holding most of her weight with my other arm around her body. Once she let go of Skyla (still had a mouth of Skyla fur) she was kind of 'what the fuck was that?'. I held her and petted her and she was fine. On / off switch back in the off position.

It was the second time I've had a dog react that quickly. The first was Hemi, a dog nearly as big as me, who jumped and grabbed part of a goat.

The event was the third in maybe three months. All big dogs. We're pretty careful but it is not always predictable.

Anyway, Duchess is fine. Skyla has some healing to do and is on antibiotics.

And the lady that runs the place called me just now to ask if I was OK. Very sweet of her.

Just another day in the land of the dogs.

I know you have a lot of experience but i would have had a heart attack if i had witnessed that.
Hope Skyla heals quickly.

I held her and petted her and she was fine. " Not the best move, should not have rewarded bad behavior. Should have turned around and walked away.
