I'd be happy to wait for a vaccine if there were a centralized database.  The Austin Health Department had the nerve to post a radio ad that said, in effect, 'we are ready and organized and know what we are doing, we just don't have any vaccines'.  Were it only true.  There is no centralized database.  There are 254 counties in Texas and as far as I can see there are that many places to sign up.  And all the major cities.  And CVS and HEB and Walmart and every major health system.  And we've not even got the priority people done.  There is no organization at all.  It is a free for all grab it for yourself soon as you can.

As it is I'm signed up on Scott and White (where Dana got her appointment) and as of last night on a local county site that actually sent me an email saying I was registered.

And really it is only me driving me crazy.  I did end up in a situation with a bunch of maskless people inside a room yesterday and it was the last time I even come close to doing that again.  I was picking up a take out that turns out they would have brought to my car.

I'm now working on an order for milk and mulch from HEB and a couple of bags of rock at Home Depot — both back up and dump it in the car.  No more people, please.

Yeah, and it’s not as if this isn’t a well-studied phenomenon. Every deli and post office everywhere knows that people wait much more patiently and behave better as customers after they “take a number.”

Ain't that the truth.

I really feel for you. It was like that here till the hospital system got in on it — at least now you can be registered with them. Just have to be patient after that and they will get around to you. Unless you are like me and Dave and use the same email and phone number to register both people — then only one might get called!
Good luck and hope you can get one fast.

I really do not understand why, given that we have had a almost a year of this pandemic, there is not a more organized approach to getting vaccinated. I swear if they had given me the job last March of organizing this for my county or even my state, it would be done in an orderly fashion and not rely on people clicking refresh all day long or having to call repeatedly. I just had my first dose of Moderna this afternoon but it happened because I just happen to belong to an organization that was looking out for its members and some politician I had never even heard of set up a one-day pop-up innoculation center. Totally random. Should not be this way.

We lost so much time without any national leadership that the organizing is just getting going. Next month will be a vaccine 🎉

I think you're letting the state governments off a bit easy. It became clear to me early on that there wasn't going to be any kind of coherent national plan for distribution, so the states should have started planning how they were going to sign people up to get vaccinated. And it's the sign-up that seems to be the big issue. Once people I know have managed to get an appointment, the actual process of getting vaccinated has been very well organized at the vaccinating sites.

Yeah, you're probably right. It is lack of leadership across the board. It was mostly a lost year of stupid leaders when there was clearly an opportunity for greatness. NZ comes to mind even if they do have the advantage of being small and isolated.

The actual process of getting shots is run by mostly nurses. No surprise it is organized.
