I was down to my last 10% of a Kindle library book when it expired and now I have to wait for likely a week or so until it becomes available again.  It is a SF book, not a mystery so not a huge problem.  I've got it bookmarked in my Kindle and will just pick it up again.  But that is one thing I miss about IRL books.  You could weight the cost of daily fines vs finishing the book.  And frequently could just take it back to the library and have it re-loaned immediately.  Just another date stamp.  But now, it is just a message saying 'we took it back'.  Worth the advantage of not having to go anywhere to get it anyway but still.

And I miss the librarians.  And the Dewey Decimal System.

No biking today.  I actually had a bit of a wobble in the front wheel of my mountain bike so I took it to the bike guy who adjusted something or other.  I need to go pick it up having forgotten to do so on my way to or from Costco this morning.    Just flitting all around today.

But I'm resting a bit.  In fact I need to go get the damn wheel before the nap hour sneaks past.  I could use a good nap.

Oh yeah, finishing a book is always well worth 5 or 10 cents a day, and I like that it is entirely up to me. I don't have a Kindle but I do have the ability to check out five electronic items from my library system every month. Usually I take out music to listen to on my computer, because I don't like reading entire books on my computer screen. We still go to the library in person for our books, and in fact I have a book waiting for me on the hold shelf.

I don't live within the limits of a city so I have to pay for library membership. Long as I'm paying for a membership I chose to pay for the Brooklyn Library membership. Bigger selection than the one here. Long drive to checkout a book, though. It's a compromise. I don't get physical books anymore but I never have to wear reading glasses to read a book. I just change the font size. And every book I have is in my pocket on my Pixel or sitting by my chair.

Sometimes I miss the physical book but I've gotten over it.

Oh my goodness, no library! I know there are such places — I was horrified to learn, when I moved to Long Island, that the place we lived the first year had NO library we could join, not for love nor money. I had never heard of such a thing. The first thing I did once we bought a house and moved, was to bring the deed to the local library and demand my library card. I had no idea you could pay to join Brookyn Library! Very cool.

The town we're in has a pretty nice library but we don't actually live within the city limits so I'd been paying $25 a year (not a lot) but started getting more and more online stuff. Brooklyn is not the only but is probably the most extensive collection available for an annual fee. It costs $60. I go through maybe three or four books a month between listening and Kindling.

Libraries were my Internet. Back in the olden days when you had to find books to get facts. Librarians were the goddesses of that particular religion. What a change in our lifetime.

if you know the end of lending is nigh, you can pop your kindle into airplane mode and finish the book that way

How funny.. .. I didn't even see airplane mode on it but I guess that makes sense. Excellent.

I am sure the librarians miss you, we love seeing real people

Our library system has just abolished overdue fines. They don't want to discourage reading. I like that idea.
