So far so good on the consistent Internet.  It has been up for the day.  I'll assume it was a hiccup unless/until it goes down again.

Two funny things.

Dana wanted me to save the instructions for the propane heater.  The paper ones.  I said, yeah, OK, just appeasing her.  Then with no Internet I tried to find info that I had saved on the Arris modem.  Turned out I didn't need it but it did make me think.  I need to turn off the electricity in the house for an hour or so and then try to do all the stuffs.  I immediately put the paper copy of the heater instructions in with the heater.  And I'm rethinking everything I've got.

And, long as I've got Internet problems I may as well make it worse.  I've been eyeballing the Gen 5 Echo for a while but at $99 it seemed pricey.  Simultaneously Amazon lowered the price to the amount I had earned in my Prolific account.  Seemed like a sign.  So I've ordered it for our living room and will rotate the rest around likely putting the next best one in my office.

We use them pretty continuously one thing or another.  I've got a pretty extensive music list that I put on random and play when I'm cooking and having it on a really nice speaker would be good.  As long as I've got Internet.

every single one of my instruction manuals, knitting and crocheting and sewing patterns is on google drive. i'm pretty sure that means they are also on my laptop's drive but perhaps i should check.... no electricity used to freak me out. now it's the no internet that terrifies me

I've got it all backed up (including the PC) on a 1TB USB drive that I think I can plug into either of two laptops. But, like you, I need to test.

So. Thank you. Turns out, no surprise, I have redundancies of my redundancies. I did find a mouse that didn't work and had a moment of panic that I had no backup but, of course, I did. And then the mouse that wouldn't work roared to life. Also now my latest windows up date is updated. so thanks!

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but can't you just use your cellphone to look up stuff in a no-power situation? Not that I'm one to talk as I always keep the paper instructions anyway.

I've got everything downloaded to a usb drive that I can access on a laptop but last time we lost power the cell towers did too. So even our mediocre reception went to non-existent. And I hate keeping paper. I shredded 26 boxes of paper when we closed the company and now I don't even have a filing cabinet or anything stored.

Aha, I suspected it might be a wrinkle that I in my mild-climate innocence didn't know about. Feelin' ya on the paper, but I go through my small alphabetical file box once a year and get rid of stuff that's no longer relevant so it keeps it to a minimum. Twenty-six boxes, wow! That's the joy of a company that employs more people, I guess. For our two-person outfit I shred, in US measurements, about a sixth of a banker's box at the end of every tax year (not to hide it from Inland Revenue but because we only have to keep records for seven years).

We had a lot of customer records. Everyone that came through the door generated several pieces of paper and I kept them all. I think about six years in I did a big shred. My credit union had shredding party. Big truck. Several boxes at a time. I did maybe 20 then and all the rest when we closed. Now I just give a bag of what I generate, medical records and checks and such, to a friend who throws it in with his company's stuff.

Why not keep it in electronic form on you phone? You don't need a cell signal to open a text file or a spreadsheet stored in your phone's memory.
