Valentine's Day

bill_schubertDana and I were both married twice before. So this is our combined fifth marriage. In a bit of agreed upon humor and maybe a touch of irony we picked Valentine's Day to marry so that we could remember the anniversary date.
We were living on my sailboat, a 32 foot Gulf sloop moored in Jacksonville, FL, much like this one but without all the ocean going equipment on the back.
I'd been transferred there in preparation for retirement from the Navy. I'd no prospects for further employment. My degree was in theater and my experience in the Navy was not transferrable to the civilian world without a degree to back it up. I was 45 years old, recently divorced, a pretty sizable debt resulting from said divorce, my one asset being the sailboat on which I resided which, of course, I had a loan against. Perfect time to get married.
The Justice of the Peace was a busy girl, it turns out, on Valentine's Day. But she came to our boat and we had the ceremony with a dozen or so other wharf rats on the stern of the boat. All went well. The JP didn't fall in the water and did a serviceable job and scampered off to her next appointment.
That was 25 years ago on this day. Things, as they sometimes do, have worked out.
On the album 4 Way Street, Stephen Stills is introducing Neil Young and does so saying:
"We've been together for years and we've had our ups and downs but we're still playing together."
It is how I feel about being married.
